Meet Your Counselor

Substance Abuse Counselor

Hello, I’m Michelle Walzem a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC).

I’m the counselor for Choose to Believe Counseling. My journey to becoming a substance abuse counselor began with my in-patient treatment for substance abuse when I was 19 years old. My own experience taught me the value of individual and group support for recovery. I was shown my path and my life’s passion with the help and grace of God. I believe that God also has a plan for you, and I would like to help you start on your path.

Recovery Program

Our recovery program follows a ten-week course of study.

Ten Week Curriculum
  • What is Recovery?
  • Finding my true self
  • Healing the family
  • Introduction to the 12-Steps journey
  • Relapse prevention, education, and maintenance of the recovery lifestyle

Individual Counseling

Be heard. Individual faith-based counseling allows you to tell your story and get feedback and encouragement tailored just for you. Together we can develop new ideas to help you live differently and find peace. I have a curriculum (a course of study) to overcome addictions, that we will discuss in our sessions. Combining individual counseling with our curriculum leads to changes you may not currently believe are possible. I know they are.

Family Counseling

Family Counseling is a key step in healing individuals in recovery and their families. Substance abusers receive help from family counseling because they often hurt their families when abusing. They need to process the guilt related to their actions.

Before, or after, their substance abuse began, their families may have hurt them too. Families living with an active substance abuser may also need support and guidance. When you are ready, to be honest with your counselor and with each other, together we can help your family heal.

Testimonials

“Michelle has been the biggest blessing in my life, and I owe all my success and life changes to her.”

“I met Michelle when I was referred to meet with her after my diagnosis of marijuana and alcohol abuse. I was not thrilled about having to meet with a counselor but was willing to do what was necessary to fulfill my order provided by Child Protective Services.

After speaking with Michelle a few times, she encouraged me to join her Life Recovery Group that she leads on Monday evenings. I now attend the group every week after I fulfilled my obligation for my order by Child Protective Services. She then asked me if I might be interested in becoming a leader for our Peer Support Group. I was honored.

Michelle asked me if I would read this book called A Purpose Driven Life. She said we would talk after I read the book and go over what I had discovered about myself. I learned that I would love nothing more than to help people like myself who have struggled with alcohol and drug addiction.

I enrolled in Grand Canyon University, which is a Christian University, to get my degree in Addiction Psychology. I was recently baptized, and it changed my entire outlook on life. My faith grows daily all thanks to Michelle and the changes that she helped me achieve. Michelle has been the biggest blessing in my life, and I owe all my success and life changes to her. Thank you! Thank you—from the bottom of my heart!” – Shay

Frequently Asked Questions

Are sessions in person or online?

I offer online and in-person sessions. We can schedule sessions via Zoom, on the phone, or we can meet in person. For more information and to schedule an appointment, please go to the contact page and send an email requesting an appointment. Thank you.

How long is your program?

Our recommended individual, addiction counseling program is ten weeks. In my experience, the ten-week program is the ideal beginning of the recovery journey. The ten-week program gives you the tools you need to move forward with confidence.

You can come for fewer sessions if your participation is voluntary. The choice is yours. However, some of my clients are required to complete ten weeks of counseling due to an order related to probation or Child Protective Services (CPS).

What if I don’t believe in God?

You don’t have to believe in God to receive counseling services. This is not a religious program. I believe that anyone can receive help from the counseling process. I offer a safe space for you to share your story, feelings, and challenges, and receive positive and truthful feedback.

Do I have to do the recommended reading and assignments?

If probation or Child Protective Services requires that you attend counseling, you must complete the reading and assignments.

For other clients, reading and assignments are optional. However, I find that when someone invests more time by completing the reading and assignments, they are more successful in recovery than those that only attend the individual counseling sessions.

Everything you are asked to do and read is for your benefit. It’s not like forced homework in a subject you won’t ever need. The subject is you!
